Abstract

The article describes the kinds of lubricators used for lubricating the cylinder liner-piston unit in the MAN Diesel slow-speed diesel engines. It presents the design of the HJ-type mechanical lubricators and the ALPHA lubrication system with the electronic control.

Highlights

  • The reduction of frictional resistance and wear of the engine’s mating elements, such as piston and cylinder liner, requires that their friction faces be lubricated

  • The keeping of the cylinder liner-piston unit in good condition is influenced by proper lubrication system adjustment so that the oil film formed during engine operation can remain intact

  • When a ship is equipped with CPP (Controllable Pitch Propeller), the engine runs with a fixed speed, and the lubricators and cylinder oil feed rate are controlled depending on mean effective pressure (MEP), Fig. 6
