Abstract
The magnetic field used for radial confinement in a Penning-Malmberg (PM) trap causes charged particles to gyrate rapidly. This motion leads to the emission of radiation, and for light particles such as electrons this mechanism can be used for plasma cooling. We report here some preliminary findings regarding the enhanced cooling rates observed in a new PM trap designed to contain the microwave radiation produced by electrons in magnetic fields B ≈ 0.3 − 1.5 T.
