Abstract
An examination of infra-red satellite images of the North-West European continental shelf suggests that cross-frontal mixing takes the form of cyclonic eddies. These are about 20–40 kmin scale and persist for a few days. It is suggested that the dynamics of cyclonic eddies willbe important in the development of frontal phytoplankton blooms.
