Abstract

This study aims to investigate the characteristics and attitudes of people who cycle to work in a Brazilian medium-sized city, especially focusing on safe cycling context. In loco observation was also conducted in order to verify the attitudes and behaviors of cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers regarding the Brazilian Traffic Code. The results indicate that cycling is a very important transport mode for people going to work, but the municipality has a precarious control of traffic, there is a lack of relevant legislation to the use of bicycles and the Brazilian Traffic Code is frequently violated by motorized and non-motorized drivers.
