Abstract

The development of persistent slip bands (PSBs) exhibiting the ladder structure in fatigued metals and alloys is discussed in terms of the slip mode and the irreversibility of slip under conditions of cyclic saturation. A model of the surface profile of emerging PSBs and of fatigue crack initiation is presented and shown to be in basic agreement with surface observations on fatigued copper single crystals. The final part deals with fatigue studies on copper polycrystals. The determined fatigue thresholds for the formation of PSBs are found to correspond closely to those established earlier on monocrystalline specimens.
