Abstract

The transient dissolution characteristics of mild steel subjected to cyclic plastic deformation in 10 pct NH4NO3 solutions have been studied. It has been reported that in these solutions, anodic polarization can prevent corrosion fatigue failure. Strain enhanced dissolution behavior was observed at various potentials under both active and passive conditions and it was found that at potentials at which the metal is known to be protected from corrosion fatigue failure, a negative value ofdI/dN, the incremental change in transient current with cyclic number, was found. At potentials where corrosion fatigue failure was known to occur, positive values ofdI/dN were observed. These findings confirm the correlation previously reported for other metal/electrolyte systems and demonstrate the importance of strain assisted dissolution in corrosion fatigue.
