Abstract

Cyclic oxidation behavior of titanium alloy coated with Ti/TiAlN composite multilayer coatings with various Ti layer thicknesses and TiAlN single layer coatings with different thicknesses was investigated at 750 °C. Ti(0.3 μm)/TiAlN multilayer coating exhibited excellent oxidation resistance. However, cracks formed in thick TiAlN single layer and Ti(0.15 μm)/TiAlN composite multilayer coatings, and titania nodules formed in thin TiAlN single layer coating. Cracking of Ti(0.15 μm)/TiAlN multilayer coating was due to that stress of coating could not be accommodated and relieved by ductile Ti phase owing to entire nitridation of Ti layers to layers composed of TiN and Ti2N.
