Abstract

Cyclic loading tests have been carried out on an α-brass exposed to sodium nitrite or soluble arsenic salt solutions to test the hypothesis that environment sensitive crack growth in such systems should be dependent upon the frequency of cyclic loading if the mechanism of crack growth involves film-induced cleavage. No significant effect was observed for changes over a few orders of magnitude of the frequency of load cycling. The results show that continuing micro-plastic deformation is necessary for the initiation and growth of environment sensitive cracks in these systems.
