Abstract

The effect of cyclic conjugation on the thermodynamic stability of conjugated molecules is analyzed by means of graph-theoretical techniques. Three kinds of such effects can be distinguished: of individual cycles, of groups (pairs, triplets, etc.) of cycles and the simultaneous interaction of all cycles. Some interrelations between these effects are established. It is shown that benzenoid and non-benzenoid conjugated hydrocarbons exhibit a quite different behaviour with respect to their cyclic conjugation modes.
