Abstract

1. Agents which elevate cyclic AMP levels (an adenyl cyclase activator, cyclic AMP analogues and phosphodiesterase inhibitors) are shown to have excitatory effects on hindgut contraction in Periplaneta americana and Blatta orientalis, but inhibitory actions in Leucophaea maderae and Blattella germanica. 2. An insecticide, oxythioquinox, is shown to potentiate the contractile response of the Periplaneta americana hindgut in a manner consistent with its properties as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor.
