Abstract

The sadistic means by which people choose to kill their victims has not notably changed over the years. For example, Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing chronicled several incidents of serial murder in his 1886 work, Psychopathia Sexualis. The murders were often sadistic in nature, involved a sexualized element, and in some instances, cannibalism. Since that time, serial murder seems to be a societal mainstay. Even so, with the birth and ever-growing popularity of the Internet, a new phenomenon appears to be emerging in our social landscape. The goal of this paper therefore is to discuss the role, if any, cyberspace plays with regard to sadistic murder as well as to raise the question, are we seeing a new breed of killer? And if so, what role does the Internet play and what intervention measures can be taken?
