Abstract
Cyber security awareness among public sector is generally associated with the security of data, and there exists increased awareness among public sector in the technologically advanced countries. Countries in the Global South have comparatively lower understanding and awareness, especially among senior executives in the public sector. This chapter examines cyber security awareness of Internet usage among senior executives in the public sector, employing a qualitative research method, conducting a case study of senior executives in the public sector, and complemented by relevant literature from academic sources. This chapter argues that despite appropriate legislative measures, there is little research about the awareness, preparedness, and protection of Internet users against any possible cyber security threats. For the case study (on Pakistani senior public policy executives), a survey was designed and conducted to understand the level of awareness/preparedness regarding spam emails, the type of email accounts used, setting and sharing of passwords, understanding of viruses and antivirus programs, internet and email policies, and support available for senior executives in the public sector. The results from 54 participants’ survey indicate an absence of policies as well as a lack of implementation of any existing guidelines regarding web surfing on office computers. It also found that there is little awareness regarding hacking of emails or data, computer virus, and firewalls. The research concludes very low level of understanding regarding the risks associated with using private email accounts, and accessing emails from public computers.
