Abstract
The modernization of our critical infrastructures and control systems over the past decade -- with new embedded system technologies and new Internet-compatible networking capabilities -- has provided a large number of advantages. These modernized physical infrastructures have better operation efficiency, save energy, and improve reliability. However, before these technologies are fully developed, we must address foundational security requirements to guarantee that this modernization fulfills its potential and isn't subject to a variety of attacks. This special issue contains four articles exploring the new security mechanisms that must be designed to guarantee operational safety as well as security in complex cyber-physical systems.
