Abstract

We present a new type of semiconductor laser, the folded-cavity laser (FCL), which uses dry-etched turning mirrors to make a very compact cavity with low threshold current density. We discuss applications of the FCL to optical switching, logic and photonic integrated circuits, and present pulsed and CW results for GaAs/AIGaAs MQW lasers.
