Abstract

A micromethod has been developed for quantitative determinations of ketocatechols released by acid hydrolysis from samples of sclerotized insect cuticle, weighing from 0.1 to 5 mg. The method has been used to follow the changes in yield of ketocatechols from five different types of cuticle during honeybee development. Samples from workers, drones, and queens have been analyzed. The increase in yield of ketocatechols is most pronounced during the period of pharate development when abdominal cuticle is stiffened and the cuticular proteins become insoluble.
