Abstract

Aim-Background Cutaneous leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare smooth muscle tumour that is often misdiagnosed clinically. It arises in the dermis with possible superficial subcutaneous extension: it shows cytologic atypia, and at least 1 mitosis per 10 highpower fields (HPF). It is believed that cutaneous leiomyosarcomas originate in the dermis from the arrectores pilorum muscles of the hair follicles and from the smooth muscle surrounding sweat glands. The most frequent location of cutaneous leiomyosarcomas is reported to be the lower extremities, followed in declining frequency by the trunk and finally, the head and neck.
