Abstract

Previous work by our group suggested that when applied as a solution in a solvent (DMSO), the local anesthetics lidocaine and mepivacaine provided only short lived analgesia in two rat models of painful HIV neuropathy (gp120 and ddC). The present study assessed the potential of mepivacaine gel dosage forms containing permeation enhancers to provide long lasting cutaneous analgesia after topical application in the rat. Approximately 24 hours prior to the application of test article or vehicle, animals underwent depilation of a 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm area of the lateral thoracolumbar region.
