Abstract

An innovative approach to custody/visitation counseling developed by the Camden County Health Services Center, Community Mental Health Program in cooperation with the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court is presented. The goals are based on Family Systems Theory and an integration of the results of clinical and current research findings. Families are seen from three to seven sessions for evaluation and counseling. Interventions to mobilize family resources are geared toward having parents take responsibility to negotiate an agreement that puts their child's interests first. Recommendations are made to the court. Preliminary results are positive but certain questions remain. Implications for research are presented.
