Abstract

This is a quantitative, descriptive and documentary study that aimed to identify the cost of hospitalizations in patients with influenza A (H1N1) in 2009 who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the University Hospital of Londrina - PR. Research was performed in selected patients' charts, identifying age, gender, and length of hospital stay. The average total cost of hospitalization and for each patient per day was identified with the assistance of the Cost Section of the Administrative Board of the hospital. For this study, we considered the average monthly cost of hospitalizations from August to December 2009. The average hospital stay was 14 days. The total cost of hospitalization was R$169,131.33, the average cost of hospitalization per patient was R$ 21,141.42, and the cost per day was R$ 1,496.74. The average costs calculated of patients investigated were higher than the average cost of hospitalization in a beneficent hospital and in a private hospital at the same city.
