Abstract

The resonant interaction between low frequency waves and magnetospheric plasma particles is examined for the case where the field-aligned phase velocity is much less than the Alfven velocity. The coupling of compressional Alfven and drift mirror modes is obtained by including the field curvature effect. The field curvature is also responsible for a new instability of the coupled mode similar to the drift mirror (DM) instability. However, this instability starts for a lower value of the anisotropy than in the case of the DM instability. The theoretical predictions are compared in detail with the storm-time Pc5 event of 14–15 November 1979.
