Abstract

Teachers attempting to find contemporary drama for classroom reading face a difficult task. Although stimulating new plays are published each year, plays just don't seem to make it into lists of young adult and adult books recommended for either private or shared reading. A hidden genre, plays are rarely reviewed in professional journals where critics highlight what is readable for young adults, and they are seldom included on anyone's list of outstanding books of the year.
