Abstract

To the Editor: —I am sure that your readers will share the conviction that a serious error is being made in the British policy of retrenchment in public expenditures according to which account of the war and the desirability of curtailing expenses on public administration as far as prudently can be done, the local government board has recommended that no reports be printed this year by medical officers of health and sanitary inspectors. This extract is from a letter from one of the foremost health officers in England, and indicates a direction of public policy which may tend seriously to impair the admirable efficiency of the public health service of the United Kingdom.
