Abstract
Using a conceptual framework derived from the triparadigmatic approach of Habermas, this paper explores the ‘practical’ dimension of classroom interactions in Botswana junior secondary schools. Ethnographic data are used to illustrate the multiple facets of the ‘practical’ curriculum-in-action. The prevalence of a technical orientation to the ‘practical’ is discussed in terms of teacher coping strategies.
