Abstract

The characteristics of currents and sediment transport in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan and their interaction are discussed in this paper. The M2 tidal current is dominant in the Seto Inland Sea and its amplitude exceeds 70 cm/sec at the straits. Caldrons are developed around the straits due to the erosion by strong tidal current. Pebble and sand mainly provided from caldrons are sorted by tidal current and are deposited near the straits. On the other hand, silt and clay are mainly provided from rivers and they are transported by the residual flow in the long term and accumulate in the central part of the bay or Nada (basin) where the tidal current is weak.
