Abstract

The theory of the de Haas--van Alphen effect is developed within the framework of the current-density-functional theory of Vignale and Rasolt. Although the noninteracting kinetic-energy functional generates de Haas--van Alphen oscillations with periods determined by the Kohn-Sham Fermi surface, these oscillations are shown to be exactly canceled by the Vignale-Rasolt exchange-correlation functional, which substitutes in their place the de Haas--van Alphen oscillations determined by the quasiparticle Fermi surface and band structure.
