Abstract
Numerous efforts have been made to solve the basic transport equation that describes a solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with mixed ionic and electronic conductors (MIECs). Classically, the open circuit voltage (OCV) is calculated with Wagner's equation. The current (I) - voltage (V) relationship is calculated using the model of Choudhury and Patterson. The Riess model is the most famous for accounting for polarization voltage losses using Sm-doped ceria electrolyte (SDC). Furthermore, the model of Wachsman is used without the constant field approximation. However, every electrode degrades with time. Thus, an I-V calculation considering electrode degradation using SDC electrolytes is described in this report. This model is successful in treating electrode degradation with time. However, the OCV should change with time using this model, though it remains unchanged experimentally.
