Abstract

This paper discusses some trends outlined in my talk at the XII ESCAMPIG. Among them are:(a) the generalization of the concept of diffusion along the energy axis,(b) the reasons for the Maxwellian-like electron distribution in low-pressure discharges (the Langmuir paradox),(c) the strong electron distribution function anisotropy caused by the wall escape of fast electrons in low-pressure discharges,(d) the formation of a cold electron population in various discharges, etc.The possible development of the diagnostic techniques is discussed.
