Abstract

The chapter deals with current main trends in research into L2 classroom processes. After a brief historical overview up to the 1980s, the chapter covers the impact of interactionist and sociocultural second language acquisition theory on classroom research. The chapter then reviews ethnographic research which treats classrooms as social communities/ communties of practice, as well as poststructuralist analyses, and trends in practitioner research. A concluding section evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of current classroom research and likely future directions.
