Abstract

Successful treatment of multirooted teeth with periodontal destruction of varying degrees into their furcations has long been one of the most challenging problems confronting the periodontist. Indeed, some earlier authors have reported that periodontal pockets that involve the domes of furcations of multirooted teeth present a hopeless, or at best an unfavorable prognosis, and should be extracted.1'2 In a recent study of untreated periodontal disease, maxillary and mandibular molars showed the greatest percentage of tooth loss over a period of 18 to 115 months;3 however, long-term studies of treated teeth with furcations have shown impressive statistics on retention for periodi up to 50 years.49 Nevertheless, the more complex anatomy of multirooted teeth does complicate treatment of furca invasions (FI).
