Abstract

With the Malaysian economy undergoing sustained growth of close to 9 percent per annum over the last 8 consecutive years, the demand of electricity as the engine to power the economic development is expected to rise in excess of 10 percent annually. Energy has played an important role in the development in Malaysia and with greater industrialization and urbanization, the efficient supply of energy at economically acceptable cost and in sufficient quantity will be the paramount consideration in the development efforts in the energy sector. This paper discusses the current status of energy utilization and projections, research and development, commercialization; and energy policy objectives in Malaysia. Current status of renewable energy and its potential is also addressed.
