Abstract

Over the last 30 years, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) has transformed from a purely diagnostic modality, to one that offers the potential for a variety of therapeutic interventions. With the advent of fine needle aspiration, targets outside of the gastrointestinal luminal tract can be accessed for tissue sampling. As endoscopic procedures have evolved from diagnostic to therapeutic, the goal of tumor destruction has been increasingly pursued. Ablation is the intentional targeted destruction of tissue for purposes of curative and/or palliative intervention.
