Abstract

The Government of Ethiopia realized 18 years ago that the Ethiopian rift valley and the Afar depression were regions of high geothermal potential suitable to be exploited for electric power generation. Systematic geothermal investigations on a regional scale started in 1969 and since then continuous investigations have been conducted and several geothermal prospect areas identified. Eight deep exploration wells have been drilled in the Aluto—Langano volcanic complex and sufficient geothermal steam to fuel an economically viable power plant has been discovered.
