Abstract
This paper discusses research efforts that were taking place in 1986 into automatic vehicle identification (AVI). AVI is one of the three primary components, along with automatic vehicle classification (AVC) and weigh in motion (WIM), in the Heavy Vehicle Electronic License Plate (HELP) Program. The paper describes the HELP Program and examines alternative AVI technologies and future developments in AVI technology.
