Abstract

Prevention and limitation of exposure to neurotoxic substances and products are achieved in Denmark on the basis of the Act on Chemical Substances and Products, the Working Environmental Act, the Environment Protection Act, and other legislation. It is the Danish authorities' viewpoint that a neurotoxic effect in humans is a serious health hazard, that should be prevented or limited to the greatest possible extent. The Danish regulation does not include guidelines for specific neurotoxicity testing apart from the OECD test of OP-substances for delayed neurotoxicity. International efforts to introduce a test program for evaluation of potential neurotoxic substances are considered of great importance and are fully supported. Within the European Economic Community EEC, Denmark has proposed a decision to be taken about labeling of selected solvents considered to be neurotoxic. The labeling consists of a warning indicating “Serious health hazards following long-term exposure.” Such enterprises and the acknowledgment of about 2,500 Danes to recover disability pension because of solvent-induced chronic brain damage confirm the seriousness of the Danish authorities' view on neurotoxic substances.
