Abstract

The causes of discontinuity in four large concrete dams are briefly analyzed. The purpose of the analysis is to attempt to characterize problems involving strength of concrete hydraulic structures. For three of the dams, recorded seismic accelerations at the ground surface exceeded 0.5 gravities. Implications for calculation methods to predict tensile stresses are discussed.
