Abstract

<i>Current Practice of Surgery</i>is a three-volume, loose-leaf surgical text for $295 with—count them—235 contributors. Semiannual updates are promised, the first included in the purchase price; the volume and cost of subsequent updates are expected to vary but are not available at this writing. The mechanical aspects of such tomes are both good and bad. One can remove a section for review at home or elsewhere without carrying many kilograms of paper. Because of the updatable format, each section begins on its own page 1. The index is cumbersome: entries include roman numerals identifying sections and standard numbers identifying pages for the subjects (analogous to chapters) within the section. The top of each index page lists the volume and the sections in the volume, but it is still awkward to use.
