Abstract

Two methods of analysis of the seismic stability of earth dams, as used by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), are presented in outline form. Analysis of the potential for liquefaction under seismic loading is based on the equivalent linear two-dimensional analysis developed by Seed, Lee, and Idriss. Procedures for analysis of permanent displacements, or safety against failure by sliding, have been developed by WES on the basis of work by Newmark, Ambraseys, and Sarma.
