Abstract

The following techniques for studying cardiopulmonary physiology in chronic closed chest canine operations have been discussed: a) chronic tracheostomy, permitting awake intubations; b) tracheal separation for bronchospirometry including a reliable new bronchospirometry tube for dogs. Unsuccessful efforts at creating cutaneous left mainstem bronchostomies have been described; c) indwelling vascular catheters, functioning up to three years; d) implantable flow meters. These methods are available to the average physiologic laboratory at this time, while telemetric techniques yielding the same information are not.
