Abstract

Despite impressive progress in the understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology, and natural history of portal hypertension, the mortality remains high. Two aspects of the problem are focused upon: In the individual with active upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding, are varices present and are they the source of bleeding? When varices are identified as the source of bleeding, what are the therapeutic options open to the surgeon?
