Abstract

Learning Objectives: After reading this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss the principles of assessment and resuscitation of head-injured patients in the prehospital setting and in the emergency center. 2. Describe indications for and principles of surgery in head-injured patients. 3. Review intracranial monitoring strategies and basic management principles as they relate to the concept of secondary injury. 4. Outline a rational approach to the treatment of refractory intracranial hypertension. 5. Describe the outcome of severe head injury.
