Abstract

Using general considerations, it is shown that the current flowing near the armature in a railgun having thick rails must fan out quite steeply to flow on all surfaces of the rails, including their back faces. The effect this has on the computation of the force on the projectile is examined. The implications it has on system simulation is also discussed.
