Abstract

Measurements of current density distributions on the plane have been carried out in negative point to plane gap in pure nitrogen, N 2 + O 2 and N 2 + NO mixtures, at pressure 750 Torr. In pure nitrogen, total current increased with time and a bell shape profile was obtained. On the other hand, the experimental results show that small amount of O 2⩾0.5% or NO about 0.1% in pure nitrogen cause total current decrease and give concave current density distribution under the point electrode. From the results, the authors suggest that N 2(A 3Σu +) and NO take part effectively in these phenomena.
