Abstract

The ground-state energy of a two-dimensional Wigner crystal of electrons in the lowest Landau level is calculated from current-density functional theory in the projected local-density approximation. From the behavior of the energy as a function of filling factor, an estimate \ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\sim}0.25 is given for the upper filling factor at which the solid-liquid transition occurs. This value is in fairly good agreement with recent experiments.
