Abstract

In this issue of Kidney International, the hotly debated controversy about the best means to determine kidney transplant acceptability is elegantly presented by 2 leading groups in tissue typing from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The physical crossmatch, which arrived in transplantation following the pioneering work of Paul Terasaki, has been the mainstay of clinical transplantation, but like all techniques, technological and conceptual advances have occurred often in advance of the generalist in the clinic who is involved in the final decision as the patient advocate.
