Abstract
Aphasic speech has been studied within the fields of neurology, psychology and more recently, linguistics. Confusion has arisen due to terminology devised in one discipline being misused when incorporated into theories of another discipline. When neurologists searched for language centres, the grammatical theory they based their ideas on was similar to that of a school grammar. A linguistic model of language is more complex. If a linguistic assessment is to be made of aphasic speech it must be based purely on the linguistic criteria, the underlying neurological signs being considered separately. Broad correlations may occur between linguistic and neurological deficits. It is difficult however to combine a neurological model with a language model until the linguistic approach has been satisfactorily studied separately.
