Abstract

Existing analyses of currency substitution rely on the assumption that domestic monetary assets are perfect substitutes for each other. The present paper examines empirically the currency substitution hypothesis using Divisia monetary aggregates which relax the perfect substitutability assumption used in earlier work. The empirical results support the hypothesis of currency substitution for the United States.
