Abstract
SUMMARY Curettage and desiccation is an ideal form of therapy for properly selected lesions of basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma as well as Bowen's disease when performed by a skilled operator. The key words are properly selected lesions and a skilled operator. The patients selected should have lesions 1 inch or less in diameter. The lesions should preferably not be in periorificial areas where scar contraction may be disfiguring. A biopsy performed prior to treatment will determine if the lesion is a sclerosing type basal cell carcinoma which would best be treated by other methods. Almost all dermatologists are adequately trained in this procedure. Unless the operator has been trained to do curettage and desiccation, the patient should be referred to a specialist.
