Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of large segment mastectomy combined with high negative pressure drainage on the treatment of plasma cell mastitis. Methods Fifty-seven plasma cell mastitis patients were examined with X-ray and ultrasound before operation, and were treated by large segment mastectomy combined with high negative pressure drainage according to the pre-localized resection area. The treatment effect, intraoperative experience and prognosis were summarized and analyzed. Results Among the 57 cases of plasma cell mastitis, 50 cases healed at first intention; one case suffered recurrence and recovered after treated by enlarged resection combined with high negative pressure drainage; four cases suffered incision infection with poor healing and recovered after symptomatic treatment, drainage and physiotherapy; two cases presented breast deformation, nipple skew and accepted no treatment with the patients’ consent. After surgery, the patients were followed-up for 6 to 14 months. The mastitis mass completely disappeared, and the nipple and areola recovered well. The operation effects were satisfactory. Conclusions Plasma cell mastitis is characterized by acute onset, rapid progression, complicated condition and easy to relapse. Large segment mastectomy combined with high negative pressure drainage is an effective treatment which can effectively treat the disease and reduce recurrence. Key words: Large segment mastectomy; High negative pressure drainage; Plasma cell mastitis
