Abstract

Abstract The lining of mammalian small intestine is heterogeneous containing seven known structurally distinct subpopulations of epithelial cells. This report describes both the light microscopic, electron microscopic, and freeze fracture appearance and the regional and interspecies distribution of a previously unrecognized small intestinal villus epithelial cell. These cells can be distinguished from absorptive cells in 1-μm sections by their lighter cytoplasmic staining density and shorter brush border which has a cuplike apical indentation. Hence, these cells are termed cup cells. Cup cells were absent or rare in the jejunum but were readily found in the ileum of all species studied except rats. While most abundant in rabbit and guinea pig ileum, cup cells invariably constituted
