Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of cultural background information that should be considered in the neuropsychological assessment of Black Americans. It includes demographics of the Black community in America, a review of past and current issues of inequality and racism faced by Black Americans, and brief summaries of various biopsychosocial factors impacting the assessment and treatment of Black Americans, including education, socio-economic status, religion, health status, and mental health views. The chapter also lays out important considerations regarding race-based norms and other practices in the field that impact the Black community. A case example is presented that highlights the complexities of providing a culturally sensitive neuropsychological examination in Black Americans, with a discussion of lessons learned that integrates the cultural background information presented at the beginning of the chapter.
